How to Keep Your Feet Cool on the Job Site

Now that it’s mid-May, the Virginia humidity is rolling in, and those winter boots might be starting to feel a little too warm. It’s a great time to talk about breathable gear and keeping your feet healthy for the summer.

We’ve put together this blog post using our four generations of experience and our straightforward Charlottesville approach.

Beat the Heat: How to Keep Your Feet Cool

If you’ve spent a few years in Central Virginia, you know May is just the start before the real humidity arrives. The cool spring mornings are gone, and we’re heading into those sticky, high-90s days.

When it gets hot, your feet notice first. Heat causes sweat, sweat causes friction, and friction can mean blisters or boots that smell bad by July. At Red Wing Charlottesville, we’ve spent four generations helping workers get ready for each season.

Here’s how you can keep your feet cool, dry, and comfortable as summer gets busy.

Swap the Heavy Leather for Breathability

Heavy-duty leather boots are perfect for winter, but in May, they can feel way too hot. If your job allows, try switching to a performance work boot.

Thanks to new materials, you can get boots that are as tough as leather but breathe like sneakers. Our CoolTech™ shoes, for example, use Cross-Hickory materials to pull heat away from your feet. You still get the safety and durability you need, but without the sweaty feet.

The “Merino” Secret (No, It’s Not Too Hot)

A common mistake we see at our Pantops store is wearing thick cotton socks in the summer. Cotton traps moisture, and once it’s wet, it stays wet, which can lead to blisters.

The pros know Merino Wool is the best material for summer. It naturally wicks away moisture and helps regulate temperature. A thin, moisture-wicking sock will pull sweat away and let it evaporate, keeping you cooler than regular athletic socks. Stop by the store and feel the difference. Your feet will thank you by the end of the day.

Rotate Your Rig

This is a “pro-tip” from our four generations of experience: Try not to wear the same boots two days in a row. Boots need about 24 hours to dry out after a shift. Rotating between two pairs lets them dry fully, which helps prevent odors and makes your boots last longer since sweat won’t break down the materials as fast.

Keep in mind, heat can dry out leather just like winter cold does. If your boots are covered in dry May dust, that dust is pulling moisture out of the leather and can cause cracking.

Bring your boots to our store on Abbey Road at Pantops. With our Free Monthly Service, we’ll clean them and use a light conditioner to protect the leather and keep it soft for the summer.

Start Your Summer on the Right Foot

Don’t wait for a 100-degree day to find out your boots aren’t right for summer. Visit our team of experts. We’ll use our 3D Foot Scanner to make sure your boots fit well and help you find the right gear to stay cool all summer.
